The University of Debrecen is one of the largest universities in Hungary with its 13 faculties and more than 26.000 students.

The Centre for Environmental Management and Policy has been established in 1997. Educational, research, expertise and advisory activities mean its main profile on the fields of Environmental Management, Environmental Policy and Regional Development at local, regional, national and international level. The Centre has three postgradual educational programmes: Environmental Impact Assessment Management, Regional Development and take part in the European Postgraduate Course in Environmental Management co-operating with Dutch, French and Greek universities.

The Centre is the participant and co-ordinator of numerous national, international and European projects such as:

  • Greening Regional Development Programme (GRDP) EC, Interreg IIIC project, 2004-2007
  • Tools for water management and restoration processes (LAKEPROMO) EC, Interreg IIIC project, 2004-2007
  • Strategic Environmental Assessment of the agri-biomass production programme in Hungary. Research project, 2004-2006
  • Definition of a common European analytical framework for the development of local agri-environmental programmes for biodiversity and landscape conservation (AEMBAC) EU 6. RD project, 2001-2004.
  • Pre-Accession funds: tools for improving the state of the environment A Study on the management of the pre-accession funds ISPA and SAPARD, as important tools in the process of Hungary's preparation to access the European Union. Study report Debrecen-Amsterdam, 2001.
  • Agri-Environmental Indicators for Sustainable Agriculture in Europe (ELISA) EU 5. RD project , 1998-2000.
  • Instruments for Implementation of Local Agenda 21 in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County in Hungary, case study, 1999.
  • The Integration of the Environment in Regional Development in the North-Eastern Region of Hungary (Case study on the County Development Concept of Hajdú-Bihar County. Study report.1998.
