Ecologic - Institute for International and European Environmental Policy is a private not-for-profit think tank for applied environmental research, policy analysis and consultancy with offices in Berlin and Brussels. Founded in 1995, Ecologic is dedicated to bringing fresh ideas to environmental policies and to promoting sustainable development. Ecologic's work programme focuses on obtaining practical results and on enhancing the importance of environmental protection and sustainable resource management in the fields of foreign and security policy, international relations and global governance structures. As an independent, non-partisan body, it undertakes applied research and analysis to increase awareness and understanding of the political, economic and technological forces driving global change.
Services
Ecologic undertakes applied research. It is mainly project-funded and carries out projects in environmental policy and other policy fields, the outcomes of which are e.g. reports, comparative studies, policy evaluations, literature studies, meta-studies or discussion and background papers. Ecologic conducts interviews and utilises questionnaires in order to reflect current developments. Ecologic prepares scientific information for the political decision-making process in order to develop goal oriented concepts for environmental policy.
Ecologic provides policy consultancy, and animates and facilitates international policy processes in order to develop new approaches at interfaces between different policy fields, and also between different policy communities.
This includes the creation and the fostering of international policy networks. Through its involvement in negotiating and concluding multilateral environmental agreements, Ecologic focuses on cross-cutting issues of regime design, compliance by signatories, and the application of general principles in international law. A significant part of its work focuses also on analyzing and furthering the development of the environmental policy of the European Union and its Member States. Ecologic advances innovation in European environmental governance and advocates greening the treaties constituting the European Union.
Ecologic produces numerous publications of reports and studies, among others in the Ecologic Briefs and in its book series "International and European Environmental Studies". Current developments at Ecologic are addressed in the monthly Ecologic Newsletter. The various lectures given by Ecologic's staff and the events organized by Ecologic's Conference Team also contribute to the distribution of the projects' scientific results. Ecologic regularly hosts Dinner Dialogues. This event series brings international environmental experts to Berlin for an informal debate with opinion leaders and decision-makers.

Ecologic's work covers the entire spectrum of environmental issues, including the integration of environmental concerns into other policy fields. Ecologic's special strength lies in its interdisciplinary approach to cross-cutting issues within different policy fields, such as tradeable environmental rights, capacity building, global governance, implementation of political concepts or the financing of environmental protection.
Team
Ecologic has a multi-disciplinary staff of 48 that includes lawyers and negotiators, social and natural scientists, economists, technologists and planners that work together in individual project teams. Ecologic's legal expertise is represented by its Legal Team. A Conference Team has been set up for the organisation of conferences, workshops and events. Ecologic's staff are well-experienced in handling international contacts and are multi-lingual. The languages spoken at Ecologic include German, English, French, Spanish, Greek, Russian, Lithuanian, Arabic, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Finnish, Swedish, Vietnamese and Chinese.
Partners
Ecologic is the German partner in the network of Institutes for European Environmental Policy. It co-operates closely with the experts of these institutes and thus has access to their experience in environmental policy. Ecologic is also engaged in the exchange of information with other research institutions. Furthermore, the memberships of R. Andreas Kraemer and of Ecologic's fellows in various bodies ensure close contacts with other environmental policy institutions.
Ecologic participates in consortial research projects working mostly with such project partners as universities and institutes but also with business associations, ministries, Federal Offices and environmental organizations. These co-operations establish a net of international contacts which is being continuously fostered and has proved useful on many occasions.
Ecologic's clients and sponsors include Parliaments, Governments, administrations on the Federal, State and local levels, industrial associations, trade unions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, environmental organizations as well as consumer protection agencies. Ecologic's work involves national and international policy-makers and business leaders, technical experts and representatives of civil society organizations and covers a growing geographic area with a primary focus on Europe and North America.
